Fifteen trees that were planted in November in Ferry Point Park in the Bronx were stolen out of the ground this week. The grove of trees were part of a set of over 2,000 trees donated as by Prince Albert II of Monaco to honor those who perished in the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. The trees stolen were planted in memory of the victims from the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx.
The father of a firefighter who died on September 11th has vowed to replant trees, this time enclosed by a fence until they are more fully grown. The family also intends to plant tulips and daffodils around the trees.
In the wake of the theft, Parks Enforcement Patrol officers will maintain surveillance around the grove, but as of yet do not have any leads about the identity of the tree thief.
