Children At Play Peril?

14 April 2008

The Houston Street reconstruction project is set to (hopefully) wrap up work this winter. The project, which has been going on for years, includes upgrades for underground utilities like water, sewer, electricity, telecommunications, as well as the removal of abandoned trolley tracks, the installation of new catch basins, curbs, sidewalks, and medians with new traffic signals and street lighting. Not mention the “42,000 square yards of smooth, new asphalt” that the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation boasts. Ooh, so smooth!

While it’s great to see some nonvehicular traffic warning signs going up that might slow down speeding trucks, it also seems fair to ask how many children will be at play (on seesaws no less) on the narrow Houston Street median near Broadway. Maybe another warning would be in order here.
