Beginning on April 22nd, the MTA will begin distribution of a special series of five million specially-designed green Metrocards to celebrate Earth Day, and to highlight the “green” improvements the agency hopes to make in the near future. Surprise, surprise, the special cards themselves are in no way biodegradable or earth-friendly, and will just feature a color change to the standard “Metrocard” text on the front along with some helpful environmental information on the back.

The MTA hopes to begin utilizing solar power as well as tidal energy generated from the East River for some of its power needs and to increase the use of energy-efficient lighting in its stations. With the budget crunch derailing or slowing almost all of the MTA’s capital projects recently, we’ll have to see how much, if any, of these green measures come to pass.
