Brooklyn’s Canarsie Pier, tucked away at the end of Rockaway Parkway at the Belt Parkway remains a popular destination for fishing and relaxing by the waters of Jamaica Bay. The Pier is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and is administered by the National Park Service, who in a recent “effort to improve the visitor experience” at the pier, plans to close the area to vehicles from 2 A.M. to 8 A.M. and close the pier itself from 2 A.M. to 5 A.M. daily.

The surrounding community has opposed the limitations, particularly as it disrupts the routines of those who take part in nighttime fishing. Anglers feel the late-night and early-morning hours can be the best to catch fish like striped bass and bluefish, and don’t want their prime fishing-times disrupted by the restrictions.

The Park Service wants the park closed so maintenance crews can clean the pier, as well as to discourage those who have been known to live out of their cars for days or weeks at a time in the pier’s parking lot adjacent to the Belt.
