The location of the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge footpath on the Brooklyn-side of the river has long served to confuse both tourists and locals unfamiliar with the area. In an effort to make the notoriously confusing path to and from the bridge clearer, the DUMBO Improvement District in conjunction with the city’s Percent for Art Program has commissioned a new set of maps, directional signs, and local area guides.

The most unique element of the plan is a new public art project that will also serve as a directional guide for confused tourists trying to make it back up to the seemingly hidden the bridge walkway tucked under an overpass. The light artist Linnaea Tillett has conceived a piece entitled “This Way,” which consists of ray-like bands of fluorescent lights that are installed on the overpass and will serve to pull lost pedestrians toward the stair entrance like moths to a flame.

The signage and light work is scheduled to be unveiled on this afternoon. Only time will tell whether local residents will get a reprieve from the harried questioning of lost tourists.
